  • On the ugly train this morning to Liverpool street #
  • Fantastic. I have a meeting from 1800-2000 tonight. #
  • 0620 … BBC news has turned into an episode oif nationwide. There is no real news on today. #
  • Day 3 on the road. Slightly concerned that – since I only have night cream to moisturise with- I am turning to the dark side of skin care. #
  • just bought a kit kat on the train. the tea cup over heated it and it's now inedible. #
  • I'm supposed to be losing weight anyway. #
  • Moved seat on train. Nice man been replaced with grab bag munching daily mail reader. He's failing to get most of the crisps in his mouth #
  • I want to go camping NOW. #
  • I'm glad I wasn't a brass monkey in our tent last night. Hit Close to zero in the high peaks. #
  • Five hour walk. Now in pub with local beer and tabloids to get angry at. Bliss. #
  • I cannot hit the pub bore (I stole my mums car at 15) as he already has crutches. Looks like bill nighies younger brother #
  • Therese deftly deals with west Yorkshire rascist before we sit down for dinner. #
  • Her hair is in the genre of power ballet #
  • Low 2 degrees. I can believe that #
  • @jonmacqueen unfollow in reply to jonmacqueen #
  • struggling with the camera #

After our walk up Kinder Scout, we reward ourselves with a trip to the local. The Sportsman’s Inn is only five minutes from the campsite. The fire is on, the beer good and the food looks promising.

After settling in and laughing the Daily Mail for a few minutes, the pub bore (top right)  starts up on some poor guest.

“I ran away from home at 15. I nicked my mum’s car. She taught me to drive when I was 11.”

“Show me anything and if I can turn it into a machine state diagram, I can understand it”

“I’ve been shot and stabbed so many times, I can’t remember” (this I can understand)

… and so on.

Desperately entertaining. Unlike the mushroom stroganoff which was, in fact, desperately poor.

Friday night. We’re off to a campsite at Hayfield. The tent is up just as the rain starts.

Lovely site … but the temperature plummets and by 8pm it must only be around 6 degrees.

Alcohol warms us slightly (though technically actually cools us, thus making the surrounding air bite less).

After a very cold night’s sleep, we awake to a glorious day. It’s still damn cold, though.

Breakfast consumed and lunch packed, we’re off to Kinder Scout. Everything around here is called Kinder something … except there’s no Kinder surprise.

From the top, we can see Manchester. So much to answer for. ThereIMG00289-20100925-1141 IMG00291-20100925-1141

There’s also steam coming off the peat (left)

The descent is problematic. Despite following the instructions, we end up heading off course and drop down towards Edale. We have to leg it back up a few hundred metres to get over towards Hayfield again. In all around 15 kilometres, so not a bad day out.

Around half of what we picked. All cooking apples, though. There’s a lot of apple chutney and apple crumble coming our way.

Next : cabbage, carrot, beets and turnip.

Short notice meant staying at the Holiday Inn Express near Victoria. A straightforward enough affair. The breakfast, however, left me a little intimidated on approach.
