(above – look how nice and white those barn doors are!)

Last year, from memory, we had less than 10 cauliflowers, and some were distinctly ropey. On top of that – we ran out of things to do with them.

One year later and wiser, we have around 20 cauliflowers … only a couple of which aren’t particularly dense.

On the left, the cauliflower. On the right, targets for composting.

So hands up who thinks we’re having cauliflower cheese for a fortnight?

Wrong. Around 8 jars of sesame and cumin infused Indian pickle are first up. Then it’s 10 jars of piccalilli. And – of course – some pakora (delicious).

There’s a couple left. It’s possible one of them may be touched by cheese.

Within hours, the space vacated by the cauliflowers was replaced by … broccoli.  Don’t panic, crop rotators. There’ll be no brassicas there next year.

Chou-fleur

We elected to have a day off on Saturday.

However, that day off turned into 2 hours of picking blackberries, subsequently converted into 12 jars of jam …. with even more to follow.

Cauliflowers are now appearing. Last year we were overwhelmed. This year we won’t be able to grow enough. There’s a killer Indian chutney recipe with sesame and cumin which will consume many. And an attempt at piccalilli.

Courgettes will also be ready from next week … along with the broadbeans.

It goes without saying – we’re now sufficient in potatoes and salad for the next few months.

Sorry gardening fans. There has to be some of you out there. We’ve been remiss in providing some updates on our all out massive growing frenzy.

We’re spending around 5-6 hours a week maintaining this. It should result in a bumper crop of vegetable self-sufficiency for 6 months or so. Anyway – here goes:

My awesome large planting area : from front to back (left) shallots, cabbage, sprouts, second early potatoes, first early potatoes. On the right from front, runner beans, french beans, artichoke, broad beans.

Cabbage. I forgot cabbage. White and red. To the right, courgettes. Note the new addition of a windbreak, following the damage we received last year. The first flowers are appearing.

Pears. Looks like a good crop coming.

There’s also raspberries, applies (eating and cooking), and blackcurrants. Fennel is hopefully kicking off with broccoli and salsify to follow.

Following the glut of courgettes (ongoing) and radish … it’s now time for Cauliflower. Freshly picked in between breaks making black currant jam.

Meanwhile … I prepare for the long overdue plumbing.
