5091 into holland I

It’s only 250km from Zons to Rotterdam. Driving at a more sedate 85kph (rather than yesterday’s 140kph), we’re at the port mid afternoon.

5094 towards rotterdam

It’s an uneventful board – the exception being the cute sniffer dog which pops into the van to see if we have any good stuff.

On board, the menu hasn’t changed since last time – but with only one vegetarian option available, we have mushroom lasagne again.

It’s an early night. Tomorrow we’re back in the UK …

In an alternative universe with better interest rates, we’d currently be in Prague, thinking about doing the Czech Republic and then South to Italy.

Yeah! The gas works! We have independent heating. Boo, the microswitch on the shower doesn’t any more. Still, turning the tap on slightly on the bathroom basin kicks the water pump into life and supplies the shower with the needed push. Something to look at later.

With a choice of Calais, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge  - we plump for Rotterdam. It’s closer and will allow us to get to Scotland quicker, from where we will start our search for employment.

Still, it’s over 850km to there, so we’ll need a couple of days to arrive. Stopping of just before midday, we get online and book a space for April 1st. We also notice that the company hosting our stuff has also managed to lose it all, along with our email. Hopefully it’ll be resolved shortly.

5089 last night in germany

We drive and drive. Past Frankfurt and Cologne. We find our first Stellplatz, the equivalent of the French Aire, in the picturesque town of Zons. Parked up by 1900, we have the buzz of wild and free camping again … and the grim depression of it all having to stop for a while, so we can earn some cash.

It’s been raining all night. That light but insistent rain which comes with Spring and permeates effortlessly into the skin.

We arrive in the small town of Putzbrunn, around 30km from Munich just a little before 0930.  Much like the small number of other problems we’ve had with the motorhome (shower, solar panel, satellite), when on the Continent, it’s easier just going direct to the source. And so it is with the boiler.

5086 truma, putzbrunn

After a friendly greeting, we show the technician the problem. He’s as confused as us, since the boiler works with gas when warm but not when cold.

The keys are handed over and he takes it inside, while we wait across the road in the Truma canteen. Free coffee. Yum. Buzz.

By lunchtime, the technician appears again. He needs a couple more hours since the boiler needs to come out of the motorhome.  We have a subsidised cafeteria factory food. Mid afternoon he’s back. It’s fixed and was a dodgy air intake fan. Cost to us . nothing (bar the trip to Munich).

Van back at the campsite, we take the train back into the city centre and spend a couple of hours walking around – minus rain for a change.

Tomorrow we’re free to travel wherever we want now that everything is working again. Unfortunately, due to crashing interest rates and a dismal euro/sterling rate, it’s going to be North.

It’s 500km from Masevaux to Munich. A little past Mulhouse and we’re into Germany, then it’s Autobahn all the way. Most of the time there’s no upper speed limit – so we whizz along at 90kph.

Therese moves to the seats beside the table and conquers Sudoku, while I play bus driver.

Following a quick stop for lunch, we plough on and just after 1600 we arrive at Campingplatz Munchen-Thalkirchen, around 10km from the centre of Munich. It’s throwing it down.

Check in is uneventful until the warden asks if we would like some "shower tokens". We politely decline.

There’s not much nearby – except a tube station, which we take into the centre of Munich. Typically German, the train arrives on time and is amazingly quick and efficient.

It’s still bucketing with rain when we reach the city centre – and we seem to have arrived in the up market shopping area .

Another fifteen minutes of walking and we’ve come across a hybrid foreign bar and communed with the holy spirit.

5086munichStill, following our not inconsiderable noses provides a result in the end .

Good Indian,  good food, good service and a free (warmed) Indian Rum at the end of the night.

Tube back . and a 10 minute walk along the riverside and we’re back at the campsite.

But not before seeing this .

Based on our experience coming into the Rhone Alps, the alarm has been set for 0730. We’re on the road an hour later and manage to miss all the ski traffic. If we’d waited another hour, we’d have been stuck for an extra two . or more.

We’re heading to Germany to get the boiler fixed. Heating is fine with electricity, it’s no use with gas . which really stops us parking up wherever we want at this time of year, taking all the random fun away we’ve enjoyed previously.

We’re aiming to get near Mulhouse, since it’s somewhere we keep passing as we travel around the continent. It also happens to be around halfway to where we need to be in Germany.

It’s a long haul. We stop off at around 250km for lunch but it isn’t until 1700 that we arrive at Camping de Masevaux.

5074 maseveux 5072 maseveux

The warden is Scottish (despite Therese thinking the accent is Welsh). We shore up just off the main road on the site, since it’s been raining for three days and we don’t want to stick in the mud again.

Some Germans have taken a slightly more basic approach and blocked the road to the remainder of the campsite.

5073 maseveux

Never mind, along with us, all the remaining residents have joined a pact to raid them at 2AM tomorrow morning and steal their children to keep as slaves for the next 25 years.

5075 maseveuxWe go for a quick walk around the town of Maseveux in the evening. It’s small and pretty. There’s a surprising number of bars, one Italian restaurant and, of course, an Alsace place.

OK, we didn’t camp in Mulhouse, but we did end up close .

We are knackered. We crawl to the chairlift and get to the base of Meribel around 1030. Enough energy is mustered to get up to around 2800 metres and I’m encouraged down my first black. It’s pisted, but it’s a black none the less.

We cram in a few more mixed reds, then down to Meribel. Since it’s our last day skiing, we decide to splash out on lunch. Two pizzas, some chips and a couple of soft drinks later, we’re stunned when the bill arrives, leaving us almost no change from 50 euro.

Lunch is worked off with another hours skiing – but by then 10 days have taken their toll. We’re looking ridiculously healthy with all this exercise, good food and next to no alcohol. However, our legs are totally stuffed.

We chill out for a couple of hours then have dinner and watch the most recent Indiana Jones film. The reviews are spot on . the first half is good.

Tomorrow . no skiing.
