It’s a leisurely stroll from the hotel to Holburn for the last time. Very little to do on the final day here other than confirm everyone has what they need, my mailbox is cleared down and there’s no papers or mugs left on the desk.
Late afternoon I run a workshop, catch a beer with a couple of colleagues, dash back to the hotel to change and meet up with another colleague and his friend at Embankment for some refreshments.
We decide to eat over in South Bank. London is looking vaguely glamorous for a change.
Wine, pizza, wine follow and a little good Samaritan turn ensuring my friend catches the last train.
It’s now the descent into temporary unemployment … which will actually be very practical gardening leave.

Last night we had some food from Luigi’s, 19th and M. Like our previous trip to the States, Luigi’s was one of these places which offered “famous” stuff. In this case, “famous pizza”.
Mr Luigi, or his son, some other relative or employee offered us 50% off any wine on the menu. So we started with some of that. Salad and some potatoes with mushrooms ordered as a started with pizza to follow. A couple of glasses later, the pizza arrived. The starters had not. Luigi (etc) chastised the waiter and some starters arrived. However (to paraphrase someone wiser than me) “these were not the starters you were looking for”.
Another few minutes pass. The correct starters arrive and are lovely. The pizza follows, that being the same pizza presented to us thirty minutes earlier. Cold and with way too much cheese, we manage around a third of it and call it a day.
Tired, but knowing it’ll be best to stay up as long as possible, we stumble across the black rooster pub, get talking to the barman and a regular and leave around two hours later having finished the night with some bourbon on the house.

A long day on the road. Harrogate to Sunderland for a couple of meetings, then down the A19/A1/M1 and over to Oxford. 350 miles or so.
At the hotel I order truffle risotto, bottles of champagne, an eclectic mix of class A and B drugs and several Eastern European compliant groupies.
In an alternative Universe, I eat some leftover rice and tofu, drink some orange juice and have a couple of cups of Dr Stuarts Tranquillity tea.
Where did it all go wrong?

It’s only 40km from Bourg Saint Maurice to Meribel. Thanks to the Saturday morning ski traffic, it takes over two hours to approach Restaurant Martagon.
We’re at around 1400 metres. The hairpin bends posed no problem, following on from our experience in the Sierra Espuna – one exception being an overly-keep coach driver who nearly clipped us on a bend.
Here’s where we’re staying . the motorhome is parked just to the rear of the place and provides excellent views into the valley. Note the new silver screens . they really do work at eliminating condensation.
We take the Navette to Meribel Village. Though only five minutes by bus, it would be impossible to walk due to the lack of pavements. It’s chalet central.
After picking up some ski passes for the coming week, we eat at the Lodge du Village.
It’s awful. Painfully slow service and a pizza with a topping which appears to consist of Mediterranean vegetables which have been marinated in a vinaigrette.
The return bus appears shortly after and we spend the rest of the afternoon and evening relaxing. Tomorrow it’s back to skiing.
