Let’s start off with the caption competition.

It’s a very Swiss 0800 meeting (which translates to 0730 to meet before hand … which means 0630 UK time and an 0515 start). By 1000 we’re on the coffees and heading across to another office. By the lake, we’re not tempted by the “Oldies-Schiff”. Or even the “Fondue-Schiff”

More meetings and calls completed, then it’s off to the airport (left) destination London (right)

It’s a 30 minute wait to get off the plane, then a 10 minute delay on the Heathrow Express. I arrive at the hotel late … but at least Therese is there. It then turns out, we’ve been booked into the “other” Holiday Inn … so more time consumed before we can settle down. On the plus side, we’re upgraded to the top floor and an exec room (free water, woooh!). Super healthy Japanese meal follows. A little wine, then sleep.

2010-09-12 09.56.39Up and out by 0930. We drop our bag at the train station and make for the Grassmarket.

Our intention is to have a “traditional” Scottish breakfast. Well, except, of course, for being vegetarian

Maggie Dickson’s will do the job but doesn’t open for a while. We sit and take in the atmosphere. By which I mean, Japanese tourists.

All too soon, it’s time for food.2010-09-12 10.20.16

On the taste test, we’ve had better. The veggie sausages are deep fried rather than fried, as are the hash browns. The toast isn’t toasted. The beans have been skimped on and the potato scones aren’t … burned.

Still, it’s food and we won’t eat again until this evening.

We have some time to kill. Most trains are off until late afternoon due to works on the line. We don’t fancy taking the bus.

Off to the cinema to see …. Tamara Drewe. A winning combination : good Guardian reviews, a certificate 15 ensures no kids and the marketing doesn’t lend itself to the loud cinema crowd. It actually turns out to be a really good movie. There’s only six of us in. The pleasure of Sunday morning cinema.

A couple sneak to the “1st class” seats and are subsequently chastised by the staff …. who then revisit the cinema every 15 minutes to review the situation.

Then it’s off to the station. Slow train to Newcastle and a fast train to York. Only a 20 minute change and home for 8pm. The cats are hungry, but at least polite enough not to comment on my old age.

40.

After the excitement of Friday night, we’re up sharp for a train to York. To catch the train to Edinburgh. For once, we’re travelling 1st. Fortunately, we’re not going to Blackpool.

Lots of space. However, it is slow. There’s works on much of the North England stretch and it deviates to Carlisle.

In Edinburgh I use some freebie points for a night in a Holiday Inn. We receive an upgraded room (thanks), have a power nap (well I am 40) then meet our friends Abe and Morag downstairs around 5ish.

Bus down to Leith for a quick half then into Martin Wisharts. We haven’t been here for over two years and are vaguely worried that, given our improved cooking abilities, the food won’t be quite as phenomenal as previously.

We’re wrong. As soon as the amuse bouche (via a kir royale) appears we know we’ve still several years of practice ahead.

Anyway here’s the breakdown:

CEPE VELOUTÉ

Chestnut puree

VIVALDI NEW POTATOS AND BABY LEEKS

Malt, pumpernickel and truffle textures

PICKLED ORGANIC VEGETABLES FROM PHANTASSIE FARM

Cucumber and vegetable nage

EMMENTAL SOUFFLÉ

Soubise spinach

RISOTTO OF SPELT GRAIN

Roasted artichoke and truffle jus

PINK GRAPEFRUIT AND PASSION FRUIT CREAM (Therese)

Charentai, melon sorbet, honeycomb tuile

Or

CHOCOLATE CROUSTILLANT (Stephen)

Valrhona caramelia crémeux

All with matching wine. Most impressive. Portions were smaller than last time – which was good as it meant no struggle as the later dishes arrived.

We collected a taxi and asked for a decent bar near the top of Leith Walk. We were deposited outside somewhere …. inappropriate.

Moving down a couple of streets we found somewhere serviceable, managed another couple of glasses then agreed it was time to end the night. All before midnight. A true test of “middle age” is passed.

KHAN!

No, not Shatner’s finest line.

Another flight into Zurich later afternoon. City centre, right, with the Alps on the horizon.

Tuesday night we end up in an Italian where, refreshingly, the staff will only speak German.

Next day, Indian seems to be the food of choice. I recall someone suggesting Khans as being excellent. With google maps in hand, it doesn’t take long to get there.

And, yes, both the food and service is excellent. I’m knackered and asleep by 10PM (9PM UK!)

Back in London for a couple of days. There’s synchronises which makes for a much more agreeable stay. Tuesday night an average pizza near Russell Square … Wednesday night a huge selection of Indian food for a ridiculously low cost at “The Vegetarian’s Paradise”.

And Thursday night … home. Good intentions of eating in are dispensed with by the time we arrive in Harrogate. We look for somewhere to eat, but the start of the school holidays leaves everywhere packed with children. We pick up some bread and head home for … cheese toasties.

Kebab

IMG00039-20100707-1406

Kebabs seem to be a big deal in the office, and possibly Switzerland.

Unlike the British version which is typically consumed at 2AM on a lager laden stomach whilst waiting for a taxi, the Swiss Kebab is an altogether more civilised affair.

Unless, of course, you are a sheep. Or whatever else Kebab is made of.

I will, once more, point out I’ve never eaten one.
