All over

Rush from Canary Wharf to Kings Cross. Miss 1700 train. It’ll be a later one to York or one of two slow trains to Leeds. Either way, I won’t be home before 9pm… only to be up at 6am tomorrow for Manchester.  (Self pity continues, p.94)

Leaving Farringdon for Kings Cross (left) and the train arriving in York for Harrogate (right). Three hours after departure I’m home …

For the first time in ten days Therese and I are in the the house together. The bathroom is coming together.

Monster Munch

IMG00341-20101025-1403I’m currently doing some IT consultancy work for a large retailer, working our of their London office.

Late morning we notice a lot of people walking around with bags of chocolate, jellies and crisps … specifically “Monster Munch”.

We make a B-line (well, take the elevator) to the ground floor.

There’s pandemonium (I exaggerate) as vast quantities of snacks are handed out. I don’t ever think I’ve seen my colleague so excited. Free pickled onion Monster Munch.

It would be churlish of me not to take some myself. And chocolate. I skip the jellies due to bovine ingredients.

Fast forward a few hours and I’m on the fast train to York. It certainly feels fast as I’m typing this from the train. I’m hungry and have resisted any pasties or cakes from Kings Cross. The monster munch leer at me from my laptop bag. Which is funny, since it’s stowed away above my head.

Yum. I’m transported back to 1982.

Sunday. Slightly fuzzy. Certainly not the grappa. We travel a little West to the steam railway for a trip back to yesteryear …

It’s only £2 more for first class, so we go for it.

20 minutes to Embsay … a short halt then it’s back to Bolton Abbey station.

From there, we stop off at the black bull, for a remarkably decent Sunday pub lunch.

Then to York. Once again, I avoid being struck by lightning.

After a deliberately indulgent Friday and Saturday, it certainly turns out to be a very observant Sunday.

* ok, it should be done in the same style as “the plane! the plane!”

So it was the 0645 from harrogate. Change at York. Two hours later in London. Cross from king’s cross to paddington. Then the Bristol train to didcot. From there to Milton park. Do an interview. Back to didcot. Train to paddington. .. and soon the tube.

So many of the towns on the line look the same. Reading, slough, maidenhead.

Roads, roundabouts, sixties architecture, grad trainee town planning and excessively dense housing. Where is the love?

6024 york campsite

Leaving York early morning, it’s another 200 miles South along the awful A1 to Welwyn Garden City. It’s a quiet side and we’re parked up mid-afternoon.

The town centre is a short bus ride away. It’s been a few years since I’ve been here and it has retained that “Stepford” charm.

On return to the site, I’m distraught at the rampant signs of colonialism.

For a small fee, I will attach a tracking device to this and provide hourly updates via google earth, if anyone feels the need to “correct” the vehicles detailing.
