So I’m in London Tuesday afternoon for an internal meeting … which turns into a discussion on getting to Zurich for a morning meeting on Thursday.

Normally this would be straightforward. Unfortunately my passport is at home.

Up at 0530 Wednesday. At Kings Cross 0610. Need Coffee.

Off at Leeds and on to Harrogate. From there it’s a taxi home, collect the passport and pack a case for 2 nights away.

Car now … to Manchester Airport.

Let’s start off with the caption competition.

It’s a very Swiss 0800 meeting (which translates to 0730 to meet before hand … which means 0630 UK time and an 0515 start). By 1000 we’re on the coffees and heading across to another office. By the lake, we’re not tempted by the “Oldies-Schiff”. Or even the “Fondue-Schiff”

More meetings and calls completed, then it’s off to the airport (left) destination London (right)

It’s a 30 minute wait to get off the plane, then a 10 minute delay on the Heathrow Express. I arrive at the hotel late … but at least Therese is there. It then turns out, we’ve been booked into the “other” Holiday Inn … so more time consumed before we can settle down. On the plus side, we’re upgraded to the top floor and an exec room (free water, woooh!). Super healthy Japanese meal follows. A little wine, then sleep.

Morning meeting then off to airport for Zurich. Pass an unexpected sign near the boarding gate.

An uneventful flight. Upon landing it’s the usual quick train into town. An old rocker sits opposite.

That evening we return to Langstrasse. A “relative” local (he’s been here 5 years) meets up with us, pointing out that, actually, we’re in the seedy part of the street and if we walk another 200 metres, we move to the arty side. Hence my previously held belief that Langstrasse wasn’t than “Lang” proves unfounded. True to his word, we are then transported to something akin to the West end of Glasgow. Unfortunately, our friend has already eaten and we haven’t. So it’s leftover bar food. Quiche for me. Some crisps to follow. Not good.

Lam

IMG00223-20100826-2106Last night in Zurich for a couple of weeks. My erstwhile colleague and I are undecided on whether to eat in or …. we eat out.

It’s a balmy night. We walk and stop at the “notorious”* Langstrasse. It’s neither Long or indicatively notorious.

We stop at a bar and have a beer. The jukebox has a lot of Zucchero.

Wandering back, it’s after 8PM and the street does come alive … with the most overt selling of bodies I think I’ve seen outside Thailand. Just off Langstrassewe find Brasserie Lam.

Selected my me as it (unusually for this part of the world) highlights the vegetarian food.

As we eat, lots of “business” appears to be going on back on the main drag. It’s quite at odds, with what is a very up market eaterie.

*It is notorious as Zurich’s red light district, with a soaring crime rate, drug dealing and brothels. It is also the most overtly multicultural spot in Zurich, with a rate of 42% foreign residents, among the highest in Zurich

KHAN!

No, not Shatner’s finest line.

Another flight into Zurich later afternoon. City centre, right, with the Alps on the horizon.

Tuesday night we end up in an Italian where, refreshingly, the staff will only speak German.

Next day, Indian seems to be the food of choice. I recall someone suggesting Khans as being excellent. With google maps in hand, it doesn’t take long to get there.

And, yes, both the food and service is excellent. I’m knackered and asleep by 10PM (9PM UK!)
