We leave the gym at 0730. That’s right folks …. tread mill, cycle machine and weights all done. By 0900 we’re at the ferry terminal waiting to board our boat to the barrier reef.

Here we are, heading 40km off the coast …

By 1130 we’re at the pontoon and after a quick snorkelling lesson, it’s in the sea on a guided tour of the Moore Reef. After lunch it’s off on a sea walk. Think Jules Verne style diving (or the old Action Man diving kit with the lead boots) …

Although they look like they’ve been taken by Mr Photoshop, I can assure you the pictures are genuine.

With a couple of hours before our return, we go snorkelling by ourselves. No waterproof camera, so we don’t have images of the clown fish (nemo) that we spotted on one of the cliffs. I can show you the reef from the glass base below the pontoon …

If you click on our map of Australia now, you’ll find Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns and 40km off coast at the barrier reef.

Back in Cairns early evening, the food gods conspire against us …. for a change we discover around six places we can have a good meal. We end up with Thai… where Therese reflects on what she’d wished for, when she receives the biggest portion of vegetable fried rice ever.

Cairns

The shuttle bus arrives on time at 0800 to take us to the airport. We scurry around several Sydney hotels while it fills and are at the airport for 0840. It’s no exaggeration to say it’s chaotic - the queues to check in are running outside the front doors of the airport.

I check in at the kiosk while Therese finds a place in the queue. Despite the length, we’re clear of check in and security within around 30 minutes.

It’s an uneventful flight. We land in 32 degrees and a fair amount of humidity. A short taxi trip later we’re in the Holiday Inn Cairns and very hungry. Fortunately we’re close to the seafront and a multitude of eateries.

Yes, once again it’s pizza. There’s supposed to be a couple of good veggie places in Cairns but we’re just too famished to look. And in 32 degrees there’s only one thing to have with pizza ….

Afterwards, it’s a wander around to find some supplies for our stay here to cover breakfast and lunch. Scarily, we find another Woolworths - but not before we’d found this …

Yum.

We also book a trip out to the barrier reef … more of which tomorrow.

We miss the 0918 train by two minutes. A long black later, we’re on the 1018 to Katoomba and the Blue Mountains.

It’s a two hour journey; the first hour through the North Western suburbs, the second a steady climb into the mountains. We’re entertained by three aging Australians discussing women divorcing their sons, bosses trying to avoid the tax system and paying off their first mortgage early. Sadly, they depart but are replaced by some Lancashire folk confirming to the Australian opposite them that as well as hedges in England there are mountains and nice flowers.

Once arrived, it’s a walk along Katoomba Street to the visitors centre at Echo Point. Here’s the three sisters (and Therese) below.

We walk part of the rim - but given the train journey times, don’t hang around for more than a couple of hours before returning to the station.

Unfortunately,  there’s no entertainment for us as we travel back to Sydney. Since it’s our last night, we have a quick look online for restaurants and spot a Veggie friendly Chinese. This turns out to be less friendly than expected, though hardly a disaster as we found an excellent Indian place on route called Masala, which we return to for dinner.

The night finishes with packing. Tomorrow we’re on an early flight to Cairns.

Whilst Therese and Stephen went off to the Zoo, I spent the afternoon water skiing.

We’re outside the Sydney Aquarium by 8.30 this morning. We’ve walked past several times in the last few days and the queues have been massive. A coffee later and we’re inside.

Special guest is the Dugong …

A couple of hours later, we’re off, via Circular Quay, to Taronga Zoo. The ferries are packed and a couple of extras laid on.

Coming back, it’s another packed ferry and we realise we’ve been sightseeing for 8 hours. A quick change back at the hotel and we finish the evening with a meal at Darling Harbour. A break from Chinese tonight with (what else!) Italian.
